AM4 - Knitting in the Shadows: an Introduction to Shadow Knitting

Instructor: Kyle Kunnecke
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

Students should have basic knittings, including the ability to cast on, knit/purl, and increase/decrease. Knowing how to read charts is helpful; this skill will be discussed during class for those who may need a review.

Description:

This technique is truly magical. Working with one color of yarn at a time, and only knit and purl stitches, a fabric can be created that reveals an image when viewed at an angle.

In this workshop we explore shadow knitting, become comfortable with navigating its instructions, and then explore the general methods involved in creating shadow knitting patterns of our very own.

Included in Class:
  • Hand-out will be distributed in class.

Supplies Needed:
  • 2 skeins of of worsted weight yarn that are high in contrast
  • circular knitting needles appropriate for the yarn you have selected (I like to have a variety of needles with me when creating a new design)
  • stitch markers, pencil
  • measuring tape
  • sticky notes or magnetic board to keep your place on the chart
  • the usual knitting bag filled with treasures
Homework:
  • Be sure all yarns are wound and ready to use.

PM4 - Colorwork Cables

Instructor:  Kyle Kunnecke
Skill Level:  Intermediate

Students should already have basic knitting skills, including cast on, bind off, knit/purl, cables, chart reading, and easy colorwork.

Description:

Cabled knitting is beautiful and creates a lovely, textured fabric. In this class we will explore the combination of cable knitting with the principles of colorwork.

We will work on two samples, each focused on its own colorwork principles. First, we will use a chart that combines stranding and cabling. Then we will move on to tackle a swatch combining intarsia and cables. By the end of this class you should have a great understanding of how to combine these techniques, and be able to see opportunities to modify existing patterns to add color to cabling.
